Marina Veljanovska O’Brien is an Associate at The Wicks Group, where her practice focuses on regulatory and litigation matters. She assists clients in administrative proceedings and enforcement actions before the US Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Department of Labor and other government agencies. Marina also advises airport managers and sponsors on compliance with FAA grant assurance requirements. In addition, Marina has experience with civil and commercial litigation, as well as cross-border transactions.

Prior to joining The Wicks Group, Ms. O’Brien was a Judicial Law Clerk at the Superior Court for the District of Columbia, where her work focused on the civil calendars. She also served on the Executive Committee of the William B. Bryant Inn of Court, which meets at the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and has been a legal consultant to the World Bank and an international program assistant for a telecommunications cooperative association.

Ms. O’Brien is currently admitted to practice in Virginia and before the US Court of Federal Claims. She works under the supervision of firm partners.

Representative Experience

  • Representing airport management companies and fixed-base operators in commercial transactions, federal regulatory compliance issues, civil litigation and settlement negotiations
  • Advising clients on airport terminal use issues and restrictions, including local law compliance with federal obligations
  • Counseling clients on issues related to antitrust, lobbying, ethics, as well as contracts issues such as covenants not to compete, immunities and disclaimers, and liabilities
  • Assisting pro bono and regular clients in all aspect of civil litigation including discovery, hearings, motion practice and negotiations
  • Negotiating and documenting aircraft purchase agreements
  • Managing a civil court docket, researching and drafting judicial opinions and orders, and advising judges on issues of civil procedure, choice of law, court rules and litigation strategy
  • Analyzing legal frameworks, coverage, procedures, exemptions, enforcement and sanctions relevant to Freedom of Information Act requests, conflict of interest, and immunities laws in several Eastern European countries
  • Conducting due diligence, reviewing compliance documents, and researching and analyzing Securities Exchange Commission regulations for a wealth management company
